Presentations:
Suzanne Bull MBE, Creative Consultant and Founder of Attitude is Everything
Suzanne Bull is passionate about music, arts and culture being open and inclusive to everyone in the community. For 25 years, she led Attitude is Everything, a charitable organisation which connects disabled people with the music and live event industries to improve access together. She was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Honours in June 2013 for services to music, arts and disabled people, she was conferred an Honorary Fellowship by Falmouth University in July 2022, and she has won other awards for her work. Now she is a creative consultant, supporting disability diversity in arts and culture, climate sustainability and cancer patient advocacy. As a disabled, working-class woman who lives with a cancer diagnosis, she proves that lived experience is a powerful tool for systemic change. Suzanne will be discussing cultural competence in performing arts health with a focus on the lived experiences of disabled performers and creators.

This session will focus on enhancing practitioners’ skills and confidence to communicate effectively and compassionately across diverse cultural, racial, and socioeconomic contexts. We’ll establish a shared understanding of key terms such as health equity, intersectionality, cultural safety, and anti-racism. We will then explore the impact of systemic inequities on outcomes for artists and performers, before moving into case studies that illustrate the risks of assumptions and the importance of curiosity. Practical tools and strategies for culturally responsive and trauma-informed communication will be shared, alongside reflection points to help you consider how to implement these approaches in your daily practice. The session will close with an invitation to identify clear next steps and commitments to embed learning into future interactions with clients and the wider system.

BAPAM’s expert-led training events are ideal for healthcare and education practitioners working in the performing arts who wish to deepen their understanding and enhance their skills. We explore research, evidence and practice to treat and prevent common and complex health problems specific to artists, creators and performance professionals. We share knowledge and invite discussion on key topics in current performing arts medicine practice. Our approach is multidisciplinary: physiological and psychological care for healthy and sustainable creative practice.
Online sessions are held on the last Wednesday of the month from 7pm BST. Most sessions are recorded for ticket holders who cannot attend on the day (please check the event description).
