September's CPD will explore how to support performing arts professionals who have caring responsibilities

In partnership with PiPA (Parents and Carers in Performing Arts). More details soon.

Many performing arts professionals find that caring responsibilities, be it of a child or a loved one, impact their ability to work. Research from PiPA shows that 60% of performing arts professionals surveyed in their Balancing Act:Part 2 reported difficulty managing both family and work. Parenting and caring can have unique impacts on mental and physical health. For example, research from Carers UK shows that many carers health is impacted by their caring responsibilities.

We are happy to welcome PiPA (Parents and Carers in Performing Arts) to speak about how the performing arts industry can impact parents and carers

Anna Ehnold-Danailov, Co-Founder and Creative Director, PiPA (Parents and Carers in Performing Arts)

Anna is the Co-Founder and Creative Director of PiPA, the UK’s leading organisation driving care-inclusive change across the performing arts sector. A former theatre director, she brings both professional and lived experience to her work supporting parents and carers across the industry. Anna leads PiPA’s work with employers and sector partners, helping organisations translate research and evidence into practical action and build a better understanding of the realities of combining caring responsibilities with careers in the performing arts.

Anna will share insights from PiPA’s research into the experiences of parents and carers working across theatre, music, dance and opera. She will explore the realities of balancing caring responsibilities with the demands of a performing arts career, the impact this can have on wellbeing and working lives, and the practical steps employers are taking to create more supportive and sustainable working environments.

Helen Whitaker – Psychotherapist

With more than 20 years experience as a performer, and a decade as a therapist, Helen brings her expertise from both areas of her international career to her work with BAPAM. Helen runs a private clinic in Brighton, as well as working with organisations such as Release Therapy for Women, BAPAM and Valentine Voice Care. She offers one-to-one psychotherapy, clinical supervision and facilitates groups for new parents alongside her work as a performer.

BAPAM’s expert-led training events are ideal for healthcare and education practitioners working in the performing arts who wish to deepen their understanding and enhance their skills. We explore research, evidence and practice to treat and prevent common and complex health problems specific to artists, creators and performance professionals. We share knowledge and invite discussion on key topics in current performing arts medicine practice. Our approach is multidisciplinary: physiological and psychological care for healthy and sustainable creative practice.

Online sessions are held on the last Wednesday of the month from 7pm BST. Most sessions are recorded for ticket holders who cannot attend on the day (please check the event description).
