I am a professional horn player with more than 25 years of experience and am currently a member of the orchestra at Welsh National Opera. I also continue to perform as a guest musician with major orchestras across the UK.

During my years as a freelance musician, I developed a strong interest in the psychological aspects of performance and the uniqueness of every performer, particularly how musicians each experience and manage the pressures of performing under stress.

I hold a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, an MSc in Performance Psychology, and am a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Alongside my work as a musician, I support performers in managing performance anxiety and developing the psychological skills needed to cope more effectively and perform at their best under pressure. I work privately with musicians at all stages of their careers, from students to established professionals. I have also worked as a performance coach at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for over 10 years, and work with   students at University of Birmingham, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and Wells Cathedral School.

Drawing on both my professional performing experience and evidence-based psychological approaches, I work with musicians in areas including:

  • Preparation strategies
  • Self-talk and cognitive reframing
  • Imagery and visualisation
  • Goal setting

Sessions are tailored to individual needs, and group workshops or classes can also be arranged.

As a full-time professional musician, I understand firsthand the challenges performers face. I offer practical, empathetic support to musicians seeking guidance at any stage of their development. This may include:

  • Preparation for auditions, concerts, and other performances
  • Support following a setback or difficult performance experience
  • Performance mentoring and ongoing development
  • Exploring performance-related concerns and identifying practical strategies that may enhance their performing skills
  • Learning psychological skills that can enhance confidence, focus, and consistency in performance
