Singers should take a vow of silence if they have a cold.

It depends what stage your cold is at. It is quite possible to sing with a cold, but in fact, speaking can be more damaging to your vocal cords, especially speaking on the phone, as we tend to force our voices to compensate for the lack of non-verbal clues we can give.
